1  Preparation


  • Select a well-lit area and a clean surface
  • Prepare the following supplies:
    - Puncture-resistant sharps container for disposal of syringe
    - 2x2 gauze or tissue
  • Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water or anti-bacterial cleanser

2  Injection site preparation


  • Injection site should be chosen by using the image provided (below - click here)
  • Be sure to rotate sites of injection weekly
  • Clean the chosen injection site with a sterile wipe and allow to dry

3  Administration of Metoject® Subcutaneous (once a week)


  • You may notice an air bubble in the pre-filled syringe. You do not need to remove the air bubble. It will dissolve under skin
  • DO NOT pull back on the plunger at any time
  • Pull off the needle cover cap. (You may notice a drop of liquid at the end of the needle - this is normal)
  • Pinch injection site between your thumb and forefinger
  • Hold syringe (like a dart) at an angle of 90 degrees or 45 degrees to the skin
  • Insert needle completely, using a quick, short motion
  • Slowly inject all the medication. Release the skin as you remove the syringe
  • With gauze, press injection site until any bleeding has stopped
  • Call your healthcare professional if you have any questions

4  Dispose of used supplies


  • Do not recap needle
  • Place used syringe in puncture-resistant container
  • Place wipe gauze in trash
  • When needle container is full, dispose of it as directed by your pharmacist

When selecting a site, remember,
Injection is given into fatty tissue.


The best areas are shown in the image (light blue areas). The lower abdomen, thighs and upper arms are easiest for self injection.


Be sure to rotate the sites. You should not repeat injections into the same spot. Stay 5 cm (2 inches) away from the belly button. Avoid surgical scars.
