1. What is Metoject®?

Metoject® is a pre-filled syringe of methotrexate. It is registered for the treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis and Psoriatic Arthritis/Psoriasis.

2. What is Methotrexate (MTX)?

Methotrexate is one of the most safe and effective medications for treating rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and other inflammatory types of arthritis like Psoriatic Arthritis/psoriasis. It is also the most commonly used drug for these conditions.

For rheumatoid arthritis, it works by reducing inflammation and by suppressing the immune system. For psoriasis, methotrexate works by attacking the rapidly-dividing cells that are involved in causing psoriasis. Under these circumstances, methotrexate is known as a disease modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD).

3. There are 2 safe and effective Metoject® products - What are the differences between them?

Your Physician has prescribed Metoject®. The dose will determine the specific product:

Metoject® 10mg/ml

  • has a concentration of 10mg/ml of methotrexate (MTX)
  • is available in 3 doses: 7.5mg, 10mg and 15mg
  • has a 26 ½ inch needle in the carton which requires easy attachment to the syringe
  • this is a luer lock needle which you simply twist onto the syringe hub

Metoject® Subcutaneous 50mg/ml

  • has a concentration of 50mg/ml of methotrexate (MTX)
  • is available in 5 doses: 15mg, 17.5mg, 20mg, 22.5mg and 25mg
  • has a PRE-ATTACHED subcutaneous needle

4. Why can’t I take a tablet?

Methotrexate (MTX) has been proven to be more effective with fewer side effects when taken in an injectable format. Your physician has chosen the most safe and effective form of Methotrexate.

5. How often is Metoject® injected?

Metoject® is injected ONCE PER WEEK, on the same day each week.

6. How do I use Metoject®?

Your INNOMAR NURSE will help you to learn how to self inject. You can also refer to the Metoject® Self Injection Guide which will help you to remember the simple steps. Metoject® is safe and easy to use.

7. What are the side effects of Methotrexate (MTX)?

MORE COMMON side-effects include:

  • Nausea, indigestion, and diarrhea.
  • Feeling generally unwell after taking the methotrexate.
  • Headaches & irritability.

These side effects are often experienced upon the first few doses. They will often go away after the first few doses.

How to minimize the side-effects of Methotrexate (MTX):

  • Take methotrexate ONCE A WEEK as prescribed by a doctor.
  • Taking Methotrexate before bed can sometimes help as patients may sleep through any nausea or general feelings of being unwell.
  • Taking folic acid may help to reduce the side effects of the methotrexate.

People taking methotrexate should talk to their doctor if they are concerned about any side effects

8. What about using prior or during pregnancy?

Metoject® must be discontinued if you plan on becoming pregnant. Metoject® must not be used if you are pregnant. Please talk to your physician prior to becoming pregnant.

9. Where should I keep Metoject®?

Metoject® should be stored at room temperature. It should be kept safely away from children

10. I have read that Methotrexate (MTX) is used in Cancer

Methotrexate is used to treat certain types of cancer in much higher doses. When used to treat cancer, methotrexate works by blocking an enzyme process in cancer cells so they cannot grow. Used for this purpose, methotrexate is known as an anti-metabolite.

For the treatment of RA, Methotrexate (MTX) is used a very low dose. At low doses, it is an anti-rheumatic drug.
